An interesting direct relationship has emerged in Canada between staging an Olympics and winning the Stanley Cup. Specifically, both times a Canadian city hosted the Olympic Games (Montreal 1976, Calgary 1988) the host city's NHL team won the Stanley Cup the following year (Montreal Canadiens 1977, Calgary Flames 1989).
The only other Canadian city to host an Olympic Games was Vancouver in 2010. Time will tell if the Vancouver Canucks can uphold this curious trend and hoist Lord Stanley's Cup come June 2011.
