On October 9th in 2024, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes made a spectacular save to prevent the Calgary Flames from scoring an empty net goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time.
As the lone skater back with the goalie on the bench, Hughes blocked a Mikael Backlund wrist shot headed for the Canucks' unattended cage, then fired a 100 foot stretch pass to JT Miller who blasted a 94mph slap shot over the left shoulder of netminder Dan Vladar to tie the game.
Despite their last minute heroics, it was Calgary who scored in overtime spoiling Vancouver's home opener with a 6-5 win.
That's today in NHL history.
